Last week we talked about improving the external appearance of your facility and making a good impression with customers, including using colored bollard covers to create a clean, branded appearance. This week let’s talk about why you need to have bollards in the first place.
Keeping your facility, and most importantly your customers and employees, safe is a top priority. Most businesses are located near moving cars; unless you have a store inside a mall, there will be a street or parking lot nearby. Where there are cars, unfortunately there are bound to be accidents. Ideal Shield helped George Enterprises, owner of the Atwater Parking Garage in Detroit, MI protect the parking garage’s new swipe key card machines.
The existing bollards were 5 inches from the edge of the island curb. The customer wanted to protect his new machines from damage from car mirrors as they entered & exited the parking structure. Not to mention eliminating the yearly painting of over 30 bollards.
Ideal Shield used a steel insert to adapt the 4” pipe to fit a 10” bollard cover to extend the sleeve to the curb’s edge keeping vehicles clear of the card swipe, protecting it from damage.
While on-site we were also able to protect patrons from exiting the stairwell sidewalk and accidentally stepping off into traffic by utilizing Ideal Shield’s maintenance free Pipe & Plastic Handrail.
The customer also wanted to converting his yellow color scheme to red, all his new sleeves and handrails are red to match.
Bollards are everywhere and so is advertising, we at Ideal Shield got to thinking that all the advertising clutter in front of drive thrus, ATMs, retail stores and other places could be easily eliminated by using our newest product, the AdShield.
Designed to easily install over Ideal Shield Bollard Covers, they are perfect of short term promotions, long term advertising and risk management signage and eliminate clutter by utilizing existing bollards.
More importantly, bollards are right in front of consumers creating thousands of opportunities to promote a sale, special or other promotion. AdShields are affordable, attention getting and unexpected.

Customer Need
Three existing light pole bases in the alternate heliport and hanger location-three light poles had to be removed to maintain proper clearance for the emergency response helicopter flight path. Rather than tear out the concrete bases, the hospital had merely covered the capped off electric with a traffic cone.
These were unsightly, and in one location, was a concern for visibility for snow plows and vehicles who might not see the large concrete base. They needed something that would be low enough to not interfere or be effected by the helicopter rotors, but still be visible above piled snow.
Ideal Shield Solution
The bases were painted a bright yellow color, and 6” k Ideal Shield bollard covers were added on top. These have been expansion anchored to the concrete using steel angles. The end result is both aesthetic and functional – providing a visible warning while maintaining height restrictions.
An important aspect of every business is keeping employees safe. At Cypress Construction in Florida a car drove through the garage door where the company’s office was housed putting employees in a perilous and potentially deadly position.
Solution
Bollards and bollard covers were placed in front of the garage door offering protection to employees working in the office. This also worked to prevent a vehicle from ever being able to drive through the door again.
Customer Need
The City of Santa Monica needed to update their bollards but have a unique sized bollard that is not normally carried by bollard cover companies. They came to us for a flat top, custom color cover.
Ideal Shield’s solution
Ideal Shield took all necessary measurements and made a flat top mold unique to this job. The result was a custom orange, flat top cover that eliminated the City of Santa Monica’s need to paint bollards and improved the look of the boardwalk.

Not Ideal Shield bollard covers. We believe in providing our customers with a quality product that will not fade even when in direct sun light. Sounds like a no brainer but for some companies that isn’t always the case. We found some bollard covers that had faded from repeated exposure to sunlight. Not only does it look bad but costs the customer more money and time.

We focus on providing maintenance free products at a fair price, not products that need to be replaced due to fading. Its embarrassing for the customer and should be embarrassing for the manufacturer which is why we provide high quality products to every customer, every time.
The Telway Diner on Michigan Avenue in Detroit was part of high speed police chase. An multi-vehicle accident occurred during the chase and one of the vehicles was pushed into the bollards surrounding the sign. Without the bollard protection the Telway sign easily could have tipped over onto the popular burger joint or worse onto an innocent bystander.
During the clean up process the bollards needed to be replaced and Ideal Shield covers helped improve the look of these very important safety precautions.
This is another great example of how taking that one extra step of installing bollards protects people and the investment of hard working people.

What do Levittown NJ, White Plains MD, Chicago IL, Milford CT, Natick MA and Traverse City MI have in common? Cars crashing through storefronts.
Its is an accident that occurs all to frequently. People forget which is the brake and which is the gas, medical emergencies occur and a dozen other factors contribute to these accidents. Fortunately in each of these accidents no one was seriously injured.
It causes one to ask the question though – how can accidents like these be avoided? One simple solution involves installing bollards in front to protect against accidents like these. It is an important protection feature that is often time overlooked and shouldn’t be. Protecting lives and capital investment must be given more consideration and when done correctly will protect the public and buildings.
We’ve attached the news articles regarding these six examples of out of control vehicles.

Recently Ideal Shield helped a customer find a cost effective, easy solution to solve a broken sign system.
Customer Problem
A u-channel post that was cemented into a 6″ pipe bollard and held a handicap sign broke off at the cement and the customer did not want to incur the cost of cutting out the bollard and needed a cost effective retrofit solution that would be easy to perform in the field.
The Ideal Shield Solution
We designed a cap to go over the top of the existing bollard and it was tack welded. The cap also included a 1 1/4″ pipe sign post. Once installed an Ideal Shield Bumper Post Sleeve was placed over the top of the new system to give it a cleaner look. A blue plastic cover was placed over the pipe post and a new handicap sign was bolted to it.
Outcome
The customer was pleased with the ease of installation and plans to purchase more for the additional sign systems at his location.
